Bouncers / Nightclub Security Training The New York State Liquor Authority has stated  “bouncers” are considered Security Guards under New York State law and, as such, they are required to complete the State mandated Security Guard training regulated by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and be licensed with the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. There have been cases throughout the State where disciplinary action has been taken against licensees (bar owners) whose bouncers are not trained or licensed and businesses that are not registered with the Department of State.

The New York State Liquor Authority’s interpretation will require that those employees serving as “bouncers” must complete an 8 hour “pre-assignment” or basic security guard training course and a 16 hours on-the-job training related to the security guard’s specific duties, the nature of the work place and the requirements of the employer. The 16-hour “on-the-job training” must be completed within 90 days of the bouncers first day of work.
